The new, free NoteTaker 1.9.4 update includes many new features, enhancements and improvements.

Key highlights in this NoteTaker update:

  • The HyperLink Panel has been greatly enhanced, with support for creating links to any page, entry or text selection in any notebook, arbitrary URLs, numbered annotations (text and images maintained on a page in the Annotations section and available via link or popup X-Ray Info Box view),Voice Memos, Address Book contacts, and executable AppleScripts. The X-Ray View (Option-hover) immediately shows the target and/or contents of any link.

  • Integrated access to Address Book contacts is now available via the Contacts panel available from the toolbar, contextual menu, or HyperLink Panel.

  • 50-plus useful AppleScripts are now bundled to provide integration with iCal, iTunes, Entourage, iPod, iSight, Palm, blogging tools, and Internet research. Users can create their own scripts to customize NoteTaker for personal tasks. A handy Scripts menu can also be enabled in NoteTaker Preferences.

  • NTML (XML) export with XSL transformations is optimized for compatibility with both Keynote 1.0 and 2.0. Users can add their own XSL transforms for notebook data output in any format.

  • Option-hovering over a Voice Memo icon begins immediate playback of the voice memo at the link position, with no need for any panel. The user can Option-drag continuously over VM icons to quickly and easily scan Voice Memos.

  • New Toolbar buttons and menus have been added for Plug-Ins, Address Book Panel, HyperLink Panel, and AppleScripts.

  • Scoping controls were added to the Highlight & Summarize panel.

  • The Contents page title can now be changed globally via NoteTaker Preferences.

  • A new "do JavaScript" AppleScript command provides access to the Document Object Model of the web page displayed in any entry, allowing (for example) automatic creation of notebook content by scanning web sites.

  • Section Folios, Page Folios, and copied Sections include any linked annotations, which are merged into the annotation section of any notebook they are dragged to or copied into.

  • Hyperlinks made to entries on the current day's To Do page now roll over with the entries.

  • Minor enhancements have been made to the default plug-ins. The Tab key now navigates between cells in the Table plug-in and remembers the visibility of row and column headers. The Calc plug-in updates after a copy and paste of a sub-entry. The very first save of a notebook with modified plug-ins now saves the plug-in data in the correct location. The state of toolbar collapse/expand is remembered in all plug-ins that can collapse their toolbar.

  • New contextual menu items "Copy Page URL" and "Copy Entry URL" add a special NoteTaker URL to the clipboard that can be used by other applications to open a notebook directly to a particular page or entry.

  • Many other fixes and enhancements for improved performance and stability.

AquaMinds' Scott Love
talks about the enhanced hyperlink feature
for annotating and creating "hypermedia" style content

"NoteTaker 1.9.4 is an exciting update for our users," said Scott Love, AquaMinds cofounder and president. "The Create Hyperlink tool has been greatly enhanced to allow users to add custom annotations, footnotes, endnotes, voice memos and even AppleScript to their notebook page content. By using our X-Ray Info Box (option mouse hover feature), hyperlinked content can be viewed or played back on the same page.

"Groups and teams of NoteTaker users can exchange and easily share annotated content for editing or commenting on notebook content. In fact, it's very easy now to email a page folio or notebook to another NoteTaker user with your own custom annotations. Each contributor can assign their own style or scheme to their annotations such as color or symbol or numbering. And because annotations can contain file links, images or even vCard (Address Book information), the notion of hypermedia authoring is virtually transparent to NoteTaker users," explained Love during a recent presentation to users.

NoteTaker + AppleScript =
High powered customization and
hundreds of new feature options

"For many users, it is their platform or information appliance-like application. The combination of NoteTaker and AppleScript has made it possible for users to add custom features to NoteTaker as needed," said Scott Love. "One of the most exciting new areas is dynamic content creation and aggregation of web search results. It's clear that users, including ourselves, are spending more time searching and seeking out information from Internet sources. NoteTaker makes it easy to search the web using its built-in web-browsing and searching features (programmable Toolbar web search box). However, managing multiple search hits or results is still tedious and time-consuming.

MegaSearch:
Your personal Web research librarian

"Today, we're introducing a whole new way to organize your searches quickly by using our new MegaSearch example," announced Scott Love. "Powered by AppleScript, MegaSearch is like having an intelligent librarian go to four different search sites at the same time and then organize the results for you as a custom notebook. There is simply nothing like it. This is just the beginning of allowing users to tap into the combined power of NoteTaker and AppleScript."

Flash Plug-In Enhancements NoteTaker is widely used to publish and share interactive notebooks for classroom presentations, student reports and research portfolios. By adding dynamic Flash content support, NoteTaker users can now embed Flash animations, movies and interactive simulations in their notebook pages. Combined with NoteTaker's new "Plug-In Component Architecture" (Java applets), NoteTaker's growing community of academic, research and education users can design, author and publish their own interactive notebooks that augment or replace standard textbooks. The free NoteTaker Viewer for OS X also supports any and all notebook content types including Flash plug-ins. Enhancements include support for query string and other parameters.

AquaMinds Developer Site
Offers Software Development Kit

The NoteTaker Plug-in Component Architecture is a technology preview included with the NoteTaker 1.9 update. About NoteTaker for OS X
NoteTaker for OS X is personal productivity software designed for daily use. NoteTaker allows users to quickly and easily take notes, manage project plans, browse and search the Internet, create simple full screen slide presentations, drag or clip information from other applications (or use NoteTaker Services), index and search notebooks, publish and share information (Web Notebooks), add voice memos, and, best of all, customize it to fit any digital lifestyle, any information work-style or project.

For some tasks, generating a long document is not required and yet there is still a need to capture information, organize and process it. Making an outline or creating a list are both examples of tasks that don't necessarily require a word processor and yet the idea of electronic paper for jotting down notes is useful and convenient. Even the capture, retrieval, and organization of random information throughout the day is another example of the need NoteTaker fills.

NoteTaker is an ideal tool for working with unstructured, on-the-fly information you create, organize and gather daily. Using it can be as simple as making lists or as complex as organizing a notebook of personal notes and pages of information. As NoteTaker's visual metaphor of an electronic spiral notebook with section tabs suggests, there is always the need to find and to retrieve information at anytime without the complexity or the overhead of a database system. Thus, NoteTaker automatically and transparently works behind the scenes to index and categorize notebooks full of information. If it's in NoteTaker, it can be searched and retrieved anytime.

Additional Notes
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: NoteTaker is a native OS X application developed using Apple's Cocoa platform/development environment. NoteTaker 1.9.4 runs on OS X 10.2.x or higher. NoteTaker Plug-in Component Architecture requires OS X 10.3 "Panther" and Java 1.4.2 Update 2, or higher.
