NoteTaker is a unique and powerful productivity tool for working with unstructured, on-the-fly information. Users launch NoteTaker every day to help them organize, gather and publish their information and project notebooks. Notebooks can be as simple as to do list journals or as complex as multi-linked, project binders filled with detailed notes and pages. NoteTaker serves the diverse application needs of many users in a broad spectrum of industries, businesses and markets including education, science and business. Its innovative architecture and combination of electronic notebook interface, active full-text indexing, embedded Internet browsing and searching have made NoteTaker an invaluable information processing and content creation tool for OS X users on a daily basis.

Key highlights of the all new NoteTaker 1.8 version update:

  • Improved Panther (OS X) support
  • New Toolbar Web Search (embedded and user programmable)
  • Innovative X-Ray Info Box display (dynamic link viewing)
  • NoteTaker Services improvements
  • New data management preferences
  • Technology Preview / NTML Export (XML)
  • Enhancements, user improvements and new commands
  • Localized versions shipping March 2004 (German and French)
Improved Panther (OS X) support
NoteTaker 1.8 is the latest and most up-to-date version with improved Panther compatibility and performance. It's been tuned to take advantage of Panther's many new features. NoteTaker is simply faster, smarter and more compatible with Panther. Benchmark testing on very large customer notebooks demonstrated faster system I/O, faster application performance and more intelligent indexing. Unicode language users will discover improved application support all around. And finally, Panther users will find many new useful features added including import and export of Word .doc and RTF files directly (Word 6 or higher) excluding graphic attachments.

New Toolbar Web Search (embedded and user programmable)
NoteTaker now comes with a user-programmable Web Search Box accessible from its Toolbar. Favorite search and reference web sites can now be searched directly without ever leaving NoteTaker including popular sites such as Google, Yahoo, DogPile, Teoma/Ask Jeeves and much more. Students, researchers and scientists can also add their domain specific site search addresses to the Web Search Box.

Innovative X-Ray Info Box™ display (dynamic link viewing)
The X-Ray Info Box leverages NoteTaker's already powerful hyperlinking support.Ê View and inspect embedded links to URLs, text elements, entries, pages and files using a floating pop-up window which dynamically displays the contents of any link the mouse is over. X-Ray also works on NoteTaker's Drawers including Contents and Libraries.

NoteTaker Services improvements
One of the most compelling productivity features about OS X is Services. NoteTaker uses Services dynamically to clip and search information on-demand from other OS X applications supporting Services. In the latest update, Services management is more elegant, more powerful and smarter with the addition of "hot key" assignment to clipping services and automatic titling to actual clipping results (when sent to sections).

Data management preferences
In addition to auto-save and backup preferences, NoteTaker users can now set compaction of index pages to automatic per file operation (save or close action). These new preferences are smarter, faster and provide overall performance improvements for all users.

Enhancements, user improvements and new commands
NoteTaker 1.8 also contains many new user enhancements for setting notebook style and appearance preferences. As previously mentioned, the Toolbar contains the new Web Search Box and also adds new controls for Word Count, Previous/Next pages in History list, Print Page button and the ability to re-size specific buttons.

Localized versions shipping March 2004 (German & French)
NoteTaker will be available in localized versions for German and French language users during the 2nd week of March 2004.

AquaMinds' Scott Love talks about NoteTaker 1.8 and beyond (SilverStar product roadmap)
"Our development team has delivered the first component of our SilverStar Technology Plan called NTML (Note-Taking Markup Language). SilverStar is the name of our product roadmap plan that pledges to our customers that we will never lock up their data or files using a proprietary file format. Because we are in fact actively developing cross-platform products and technologies designed to extend the value of our software and services. It's always been part of our original business strategy to do this. NTML is exciting because it's XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and it's an open, publicly available API for exchanging data with other XML-based applications," said Scott Love, president of AquaMinds Software Corporation. "For example, we embed a free XSLT (transformer) inside of NoteTaker 1.8 for turning NTML into APML. APML is Apple's public XML-based API for Keynote, their presentation application. We expect other XSLTs will be developed to transform NTML into other XML-based file formats. And best of all, these third-party XSLTs will be plug-compatible with NoteTaker's Export NTML option. They'll be available from NTML's pull-down menu."

NoteTaker's Evolution as an Information Power Tool (Internet Integration Becoming More Transparent To Users)
"When we invented Web Notebooks, we envisioned a more powerful way for everyday users to leverage the Internet and the Web to their advantage by publishing their own content with a single command. Turning this around, we have further integrated our web page viewing and browsing support by adding built-in web searching directly to NoteTaker's Toolbar. Instead of users hunting for a browser to do a web search, NoteTaker 1.8 users type a search term into their own custom Web Search Box to perform a live, on-demand search whenever connected. The results appear inside of their notebook page as new entry or can they be viewed as a separate window but all within NoteTaker's environment. This is highly desirable since NoteTaker has clipping services and indexing built-in to further harvest user-driven information gathering tasks. NoteTaker defines yet again what a digitally connected notebook can do for improving user productivity and information publishing," said Love.

About NoteTaker for OS X
NoteTaker 2003 for OS X is personal productivity software designed for daily use. NoteTaker allows users to quickly and easily take notes, manage project plans, browse and search the Internet, create simple full screen slide presentations, drag or clip information from other applications (or use NoteTaker Services), index and search notebooks, publish and share information (Web Notebooks), add voice memos, and, best of all, customize it to fit any digital lifestyle, any information work-style.

For some tasks, generating a long document is not required and yet there is still a need to capture information, organize and process it. Making an outline or creating a list are both examples of tasks that don't necessarily require a word processor and yet the idea of electronic paper for jotting down notes is useful and convenient. Even the capture, retrieval, and organization of random information throughout the day is another example of the need NoteTaker fills.

NoteTaker is an ideal tool for working with unstructured, on-the-fly information you create, organize or gather daily. Using it can be as simple as making lists or as complex as organizing a notebook full of personal notes and pages of information. As NoteTaker's visual metaphor of an electronic spiral notebook with section tabs suggests, there is always the need to find and to retrieve information at anytime without the complexity or the overhead of a database system. Thus, NoteTaker automatically and transparently works behind the scenes to index and categorize notebooks full of information. If it's in NoteTaker, it can be searched and retrieved anytime.

Additional Notes
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: NoteTaker 2003 is a native OS X application developed using Apple's Cocoa platform/development environment. NoteTaker 1.8 runs on OS X 10.2.x or higher.
